Mission Action

Mission Action is a major aspect of who we are as Disciples of Christ. It encompasses our desire for justice, our focus on alleviating poverty and hunger, and our attention to being good stewards of the Earth.

Mission Action Efforts

Global Holiday Faire

This special ecumenical gift faire raises money for several non-profit organizations. It takes place each year on the 1st Saturday of December. Learn More here.

CROP Hunger Walk

First Christian Church of Vallejo is a sponsoring organization for this annual walk to raise money for CROP and local hunger relief agencies.

Johnson Ranch Garden

We grow fresh produce to donate to a number of local food banks including the Amador St. Hope Center and The Sparrow Project.

Common Ground

We are a founding member of Common Ground, a local community organizing effort.

Green Chalice

FCC Vallejo is a certified Green Chalice Church. From the Green Chalice website: "Out of our call to “do justice” (Micah 6:8), we strive to demonstrate the fullness of God’s shalom through living out our faith by caring for God’s creation.."

Vallejo Together

We have a strong working relationship with Vallejo Together which works with the un-housed population of Vallejo. Learn more here.

Mission Action Notes

May Donation

The May Mission Action donation of $275 will be made to Freedom Reads, an important prisoner enrichment organization. We thank Allison Mezzera for lifting up Freedom Reads.

From their website:

Freedom Reads is a first of its kind organization that inspires and confronts what prison does to the spirit. We bring beautiful, handcrafted bookcases into prisons, transforming cellblocks into Freedom Libraries. The library is a physical intervention into the landscape of plastic and steel and loneliness that characterizes incarceration. In an environment where the freedom to think, to contribute to a community, and even to dream about what is possible is too often curtailed, Freedom Reads reminds those Inside that they have not been forgotten.

Amidst the chaos and control that characterizes prisons, it is difficult to bring into focus the intellectual, cultural, and emotional loss that incarcerated people experience. Freedom Reads is the only organization in the nation transforming the experience of incarceration by opening libraries in cellblocks.

Water Refill Station

We have all heard the expression “living water.” Our ministry has recently added a new articulation of this idea. We now have a fresh water dispenser on a new concrete platform installed adjacent to the Little Free Pantry. Have you tried it??

This installation was a very fitting way to celebrate Earth Day 2026.

Thanks to a $6000 grant from Disciples’ National Benevolent Association and the volunteer labor of our members, we can now forgo handing out plastic bottles of water. This water bottle refill station will benefit our members and visitors to the Peace Garden, building users, neighbors and passers-by, and unsheltered visitors, who rely on our garden and pantry for a moment of respite.

Thanks to John and Beth Grose, Ted Goode, and Carl Cordes for bringing this envisioned project to life.

I would love to hear any stories or reports on how our visitors feel about this addition.

While we are no longer dispensing bottled water, please remember the needs of the Little Free Pantry when you shop.

FCC Vallejo Honored by Vallejo Together

A Special Night

On Saturday, September 19th, one of our mission partners, Vallejo Together hosted a major Gala fundraiser to support their efforts in helping the people of Vallejo who are experience homelessness. It was a wonderful event with great food, fellowship, speakers, music, a raffle and more!

Our Award

Pastor Sara Steenhouse and four members of the congregation were in attendance and were surprised to learn that our church had been awarded The Community Partner Award for our commitment and embodiment of Matthew 25: 35-40. This was a great honor considering how many other churches and organizations partner with Vallejo Together in their important work. We were very happy to celebrate with them and participate in this important fundraising event.

Deep Green Commitment

FCCV's latest effort to fulfill our commitment to the Green Chalice ministry is to switch our electricity to 100% renewable sources. This is a new opportunity through MCE Clean Energy and their Deep Green program which we are very excited to join. This switch goes into effect in April, 2021. We are now a Deep Green Champion which means we are doing our part for the planet.

MCE, a not-for-profit public agency, provides customers like FCCV with a choice of cleaner, locally controlled electricity options. Their regular service provides 60% of customers' electricity from renewable sources (twice as high as typical energy providers). But, their Deep Green program provides 100% of the electricity from green sources like solar and wind. For a small monthly fee, our Administrative Council felt that it is well worth upgrading to the Deep Green program considering the immense importance of switching to clean, renewable sources.

We believe strongly in our commitment to caring for God's creation and this is a great effort towards that end.
